When Disaster Strikes! Natural Disasters and American Archaeology

1938 Hurricane in New England

Natural disasters stir up and disturb archaeological sites. After people are safe and access is possible, archaeologists go in to recover and record exposed sites and damage.

Deidra Black joins the Women in Archaeology to discuss Disaster Archaeology in the U.S. In this episode, we discuss how archaeologists review and recover disturbed and damaged sites exposed during natural disasters. With climate change, this type of archaeological recovery is becoming more and more common. Join us to hear more about how disaster archaeology works stateside and Deidra’s experience in the field!
